Let's make the issue of yoga injuries a non-issue.
No one's really sure how often people get hurt doing yoga. But there's one thing we do know - 100% of yoga injuries are preventable with the right information, instruction and attitude.
We work to shed light and open dialogue on the issue of yoga safety. Specifically, we:
Is yoga safe?
Absolutely! As mentioned above, with the right information, instruction and attitude, anyone can have a safe yoga practice, no matter what you perceive your physical limitations to be. Prevent Yoga Injury is specifically interested in working through the areas of disconnect overviewed below.
But yoga is SO MUCH MORE than asana!!
That is absolutely correct and we couldn't agree more. The physical practice of yoga is just one of eight practices that, together, form a roadmap for achieving mastery of body and mind. Asana practice not only affects the gross anatomy of the body, but the subtle anatomy as well. Each posture intentionally works specific energy centers - opening and closing them to achieve an energy balance within the body.
Those who are on the 8 limb path know this well. But not everyone comes to yoga for spiritual purposes and their needs shouldn't be ignored or their reasons for practicing or coming to class dismissed. Lots of people are attracted to the physical practice of yoga purely for exercise or community and many of these people end up life-long practitioners because the physical practice is what introduced them to rest of yoga.
